An opportunity to potentially change livesthrough the therapeutic power ofMR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS).
Essential Tremor (ET) is a neurological condition that causes uncontrollable shaking of the hands, head and voice, and sometimes arms, legs and trunk. In the initial stages, the tremor is mild, and it progresses over time. In some patients, the severity of the tremor becomes unbearable, interfering significantly with daily activities, such as eating, dressing and writing and limiting independence.
Exablate Neuro therapy uses targeted ultrasound waves to treat the small spot in the brain considered to be responsible for causing tremor. No cutting of the skin or skull is needed for the treatment, and it is performed using focused ultrasound and an MRI scanner. For many patients, the result is immediate tremor improvement in their treated hand with minimal complications.
Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative disorder which results from the malfunction and/or loss of brain cells responsible for movement and coordination. Key symptoms include tremor, rigidity, slow movement (bradykinesia) and postural instability. In an estimated up to 26% of PD patients, the primary symptoms is tremor. These patients initially have tremor and as the disease progresses, they may experience other symptoms. There are patients who report that tremor remains the symptom with the most severe imapact on their daily activities.
